Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS20 Reviewed

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS20 Reviewed

The register has reviewed the $300 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS20 digital camera.

Here's what they thought:

"Overall, we liked the DMC-FS20 very much. It lacks some of the glitz of other models in a similar price range and it doesn't offer a great deal when it comes to manual control. But then again, this is exactly what many digital camera owners are looking for. The next time you're in the market for a digital camera, may we respectively suggest that, in addition to considering the usual suspects, you check out this Panasonic offering as well."

Fujifilm Finepix F100fd reviewed

Fujifilm Finepix F100fd reviewed

Trusted Reviews has reviewed the $350 12 megapixel Fujifilm Finepix F100fd.

Here's what they thought:

"This camera probably won't many win plaudits for style, it looks quite bland, with little wow factor, but it produces the goods. It's well made, easy to operate and has a feature set that appeals to the photographic savvy. However it would be nice to have some more manual control such as aperture and shutter, and a histogram would also be nice. It's a little too high end for the average snap shooter and just a little to basic in operation for the enthusiast, despite having features that the enthusiast would love, especially the dynamic range function."

Canon Powershot A580 reviewed

Canon Powershot A580 reviewed

Imaging Resource has reviewed the $150 8 megapixel 4x optical zoom Canon Powershot A580.

Here's what they thought:

"No entry-level bargain camera is going to score highly on our comprehensive tests, but the Canon PowerShot A580 proved to be pretty scrappy. Thanks to its DIGIC III processor, its performance was nothing to sneeze at. And the same imaging engine gave it some very helpful tools like motion detection and face detection that Canon has harnessed in unique and interesting ways.

The main disappointment was in how the A580 handled highlights under a variety of situations. There was noticeable blooming at the edges of any white object. Corner softness was a bit high at wide angle, too. But, as I said, you've got to expect some issues.

Other cameras at less than $150, however, have worse problems, which is enough to make the A580 a Dave's Picks in the Budget category."

Olympus 1030SW reviewed

Buy-n-Shoot has reviewed the 10 megapixel Olympus 1030SW camera.

Here's what they thought:

"The 1030SW camera would be an excellent choice for anyone wanting a camera that they can take anywhere. You would not be concerned about the sand at the beach on a family outing or about dropping the camera in a river on a trek through Nepal. The 1030SW has features for all levels of experience and great image quality."

Sigma DP1 reviewed

Sigma DP1 reviewed

Shutterbug has reviewed the Sigma DP1, the $800 digital camera that tries to fit the functionality of a full-size digital SLR into the body of a compact camera.

Here's what they thought:

"I worked with the DP1 over the course of a few weeks and found image quality to be excellent in both the Fine JPEG and Raw modes. As of this writing there is no Raw converter in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw for CS3, so you have to process the Raw images using the Sigma software. I am told by Sigma that they are working with Adobe to get this straightened out. My advice is to convert using the software and do the rest of the work in your image editor of choice."

Canon SD 790 IS reviewed

Canon SD 790 IS reviewed

Digicam Review has reviewed the $300 10 megapixel Canon Powershot SD 790 IS (known as the IXUS 90 IS in Europe).

Here's what they thought:

"The Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS / SD790 is an ultra stylish compact camera that provides an impressive 3" screen, 10 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens and image stabilisation. Noise is controlled quite well considering the camera has 10 megapixels, and image quality is generally very good. The camera's screen works well even in bright sunlight and battery life is quite good. Overall this is a fairly appealling camera however it's price could put a number of people off buying it, especially when other cameras from Canon and other manufacturers often offer better value for money. Another area where this camera could be seen as lacking, is in the lens department, especially as most new cameras now offer a more wide angle lens. However, if you want a genuinely good camera with a large 3" screen that works in the sun, then this is recommended!

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 reviewed

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 reviewed

DCresource has reviewed the 9 megapixel $300 Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 digital camera.

Here's what they thought:

"In the introduction to this review, I remarked that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 was one of my favorite cameras of 2007. I'm pleased to report that this years model, the DMC-TZ5, is even better. It offers a big zoom lens, good photo quality, a stunning 3-inch LCD display, a 720p movie mode, and generally snappy performance, all in a relatively compact body. It has a few downsides, including above average noise, a slow lens, and sluggish low light focusing. Despite a few flaws, the TZ5 is a great camera, and one which I can highly recommend."

Sony Handycam HDR-TG1 reviewed

Sony Handycam HDR-TG1

Akihibara News has reviewed the Sony Handycam HDR-TG1 compact HD digital video camera.

Here's what they thought:

"Compact, Stylish and providing good video once turned in 720p, Sony with the TG1 will definitively attract a lot of potential buyer, but unfortunately for us the TG1 is not mature yet, several UI flaws combined with poor photo quality and a poorly design companion software make us wonder why spending SO much money when the HD1000 form Sanyo offers as good as video as the TG1 for half its price (In Japan)"

Sigma DP1 reviewed

sigma-dp1

Imaging Resource has reviewed the $800 4.6 megapixel Sigma DP1.

Here's what they thought:

"Thanks to its higher price of around $800 and the other limitations mentioned above, the Sigma DP1 doesn't meet the needs of the general photographer wishing for an SLR replacement or substitute. However, the patient photographer might find the Sigma DP1 a refreshing pocket companion for wide-angle photography, and it would certainly serve well as an auxiliary wide-angle choice while shooting with a telephoto lens mounted on your SLR -- if only it were a little faster. As with any photographic tool, an artist can make much of any device that can image as well as the Sigma DP1."

Nikon D300 reviewed

Nikon D300

Steve's Digicams has reviewed the $1700 12.3 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR.

Here's what they thought:

" Nikon's new D300 further raises the bar in the enthusiasts dSLR category. Offering a wealth of features, plenty of customization options, 12.3 megapixels of resolution, upgraded 51-point Autofocus System, a fast frame rate (when using a recommend 266x CF card) and excellent image quality, this model represents Nikon's best effort so far in this market niche. At a price of approximately US$1799, it's not inexpensive, but the D300's features and image quality justify the lofty price. We have no issues giving this camera our highest recommendation; Well done Nikon. "

Canon SD1100 IS reviewed

Canon SD1100 IS

DCResource has reviewed the $220 Canon SD1100 IS 8 megapixel 3x optical zoom ultracompact digital camera.

Here's what they thought:

"All things considered, the PowerShot SD1100 is a quality ultra-compact camera. It offers good photo quality, snappy performance, and image stabilization in a sleek, stylish metal body. Sure, there's room for improvement, but I'm yet to review a perfect camera. So, if it's a compact camera you're after, then this one's definitely worth a look."

I think Canon needs to put more thought into their product numbering as the SD890 IS and SD950 IS are both much better cameras that the SD1100 IS (and are more expensive).

Ricoh R8 reviewed

ricoh-r8

DigiCanReview has reviewed the $400 Ricoh R8 10 megapixel compact digital camera with 7.1x optical zoom.

Here's what they thought:

" The Ricoh R8 looks and feels great, and is capable of taking some great photos. The camera has a sharp wide angle 7.1x optical zoom lens, and is almost ultra compact, similar in size to other ultra compact cameras such as the IXUS 90 IS. Ricoh appear to have moved this camera upmarket with a newly designed body, and improved hand grip and control dial. The camera features built in anti-shake which helps keep pictures sharp, and has one of the sharpest screens I've ever seen. The camera still suffers from a poorly positioned flash, and noticable noise levels at all ISO settings. However, if you can look past the noise and can work with the camera - then it is capable of producing some excellent results."

Sony A350 reviewed

sony a350

PopPhoto have reviewed the $800 Sony A350 14.2 Megapixel digital camera.

Here's what they thought:

"In all, the A350 has impressive features, specs, and price. But it's still too early to tell whether it will lure serious shooters away from the new Canon EOS Rebel XSi or Pentax K200D. Though we haven't tested them yet, both promise to control noise well in low light and high ISOs. And the Canon is likely to capture more detail.

As for stealing customers from Sony's own A700? We doubt it. That camera will continue to attract hard-core shooters. The A350 is aimed at those moving up from a compact or for those who want (and can afford) more from an entry-level DSLR than Sony is offering in its new A300 ($600, estimated street, with 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 lens), Nikon in its new D60 ($630, street, body only), or Olympus in its new E-420 ($500, estimted street, body only). For such photographers, the A350's increased image quality and overall performance will be amazing, and the extra features -- especially live view -- will be reassuringly familiar."

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 beta

adobe photoshop lightroom

Trusted Reviews took a first look at Adobe's beta of Photoshop Lightroom 2 software for working directly with the RAW file output from high-end digital cameras.

Their verdict?

"This is by no means a full and finished product, but it's coming along nicely thank you very much. Adobe has listened to users and by letting them continue to try the beta is sure to provide a very useful and elegant imaging solution on final release.

It's still not perfect - there's a few file handling issues, I'd like to see more web gallery options and I personally would like the camera LCD display from Bridge to quickly see camera settings in the Library. As it stands now though, I can't wait to get my hands on the final version. If you're a DSLR user Lightroom is proving to be an essential."

Fujifilm FinePix s100fs reviewed

Fujifilm FinePix s100fs

Photoreview Australia have reviewed the SLR-sized 11.1 Megapixel $740 Fujifilm FinePix s100fs with 14.3x optical zoom, 2.5" lcd, and both xD and SD card slots.

Here's what they thought of it:

"The FinePix S100fs has just been named as the Best Superzoom Digital Camera for 2008 by the European Technical Image Press Association (TIPA). We are also nominating it as an Editor's Choice for the Advanced category of compact digicams - although with some reservations. Our main concerns lie with the high lateral chromatic aberration we found with the test camera's lens.

However, the sporadic failures of the autofocusing system and poor quality of images shot at the top ISO sensitivity are also of concern, as is the lack of any ability to switch noise-reduction processing off and on. If these issues are of little or no relevance, the S100fs will be an excellent and rewarding camera choice."

Panasonic Lumix DMZ-LZ8

Steve's Digicams has recviewed the $180 8 megapizel Panasonic Lumix DMZ-LZ8 digital camera with 5x optical zoom, image stabilization, and SD card slot.

Here's what they thought of it:

"Bottom Line - Panasonic's Lumix DMC-LZ8 is a compact 8-megapixel camera that will suit the needs of anyone in the family. The Intelligent Auto mode makes it easy for anyone to take excellent pictures and the full manual mode gives freedom to the more experienced photographer. Although the shooting performance was a little slow, the quality of the images is good and the camera is loaded with useful features to assist you in your picture taking fun. If the slower performance does not bother you, the DMC-LZ8 is a great deal at about US$180 or less."

Casio Exlim EX-Z80 reviewed

Trusted Reviews has reviewed the tiny 8.1 megapixel Casio Exlim EX-Z80 digital camera.

Here's what they thought:

"The Casio Exilim EX-Z80 is a remarkable camera in many ways. Not only is it the smallest 8-megapixel camera on the market, it has a number of advanced technical features not found on rival models. Design, build quality, performance and handling are all very good, and the AF system is amazing, but these attributes are somewhat let down by rather sub-standard image quality. Nonetheless, as a convenient pocket snapshot camera it's hard to beat, and represents good value for its low price."

Steve's Digicams has recviewed the $300 8.1 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMZ-TZ4 digital camera with 10x optical zoom, image stabilization, and SD card slot.

Here's what they thought of it:

"Bottom Line - Panasonic has put together a winning combination of portability and versatility with the Lumix DMC-TZ4 "Super-zoom". With an 8-megapixel imaging sensor, 10x Leica optical zoom lens (with MEGA O.I.S.), compact and durable body as well as one of the smartest, easiest to use auto shooting modes available (iA mode), the Panasonic TZ4 is a great camera. Whether it be for someone that likes to travel or one who needs the versatility of a much more expensive camera in a compact package. Pentax K20D

Photograplyblog has reviewed the $1150 14.6 megapixel Pentax K20D camera.

Here's what they thought:

"Despite the half-baked Live View mode and an increase in price over the K10D, the Pentax K20D is a significant improvement on its predecessor. The shutter release mechanism and auto-focusing system are still noisy, and we'd upgrade the supplied 18-55mm kit lens as soon as possible to get the best out of the sensor, but overall the K20D remains one of the most innovative DSLRs currently available, which we can once again highly recommend."

Here's what they thought:

"So ultimately there's just this small issue of the $1000 price tag: Is it worth it? My answer is this: if you're looking for a great video camera that also takes decent stills, then yes, it's worth it. But if you're looking for the perfect still camera, it's a far cry. But you might miss it when you go on safari, or to a baseball game, or when you're lighting off fireworks, or when your pets are doing goofy shit, or when... Okay, maybe it is worth it, no matter what your purposes."

Pet's Eye Camera

Pets Eye Camera

This is another of those ideas that is good in concept but poorly executed.

The concept: A little camera attached to your doggies collars that takes pictures regularly so you see what he has been up to (or gotten into).

The reality: water-resistant (so the first time the doggies jumps in the lake it dies), only takes pictures at most once a minute, resolution of just 640x480, and storage capacity of only 35 pictures.

Here's how I would do it: 4 or 5 megapixel cellphone camera in a waterproof metal container, that saves pictures to a wifi enabled SD card for automatic transfer to my home web server so I can log on from anywhere and see what the dog is getting up to.

But if you're looking for a camera that's just as easy to use though a bit more advanced, with room to grow, the Canon PowerShot A590 IS is a better budget choice. Fortunately, with Pfucata as your personal guide, you'll easily be able to find your perfect digital camera and it begins with by realizing that there are two different types of cameras."

Digital Media Thoughts found the product page for the Hasselblad H1D medium format digital camera that was first mentioned at Photokina last month.

The Hasselblad H1D is massive, reminding me of the ugly new Honda SUV, but its specs are very impressive:

The Hasselblad H1D has a large 22 megapixel 37mm by 49mm sensor, and instead of a CF card slot it has a built in 40GB hard drive: a necessity as each image can be 132MB in size (so even with the hard drive it can only store 850 images!).

The Hasselblad H1D has all the manual controls you would expect from a world class professional camera, and has a price to match: $22,000

Casio EXILIM EX-Z50 Red Star

casio exilim ex-z50 camera

Ok, I can see the red part of the name of the new camera from Casio but where is the star?

Apart from the pretty color this is a fairly standard digital camera: 5 megapixels, SD/MMC card slot, 320 x 240 video, USB connectivity, and 3x optical zoom.

The Casio EXILIM EX-Z50 Red Star will be available in November.

Useless trivia: Red Star is also the name of a nice restaurant in Portland Oregon.

Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D

konica minolta maxxum 7d

We got a close look at the Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D over at the Digital Life show, we also got some hints as to what it will cost.

The Maxxum 7D is a 6.3 megapixel digital SLR camera that has built in anti-shake technology meaning you don't need image-stablized lenses to get clearer pictures.

I asked the Konica Minolta staff about pricing and they said they didn't know what price it would be, I changed tack and asked which canon camera they expected it to compete on price with: the Digital Rebel, the 20D, and the 1Ds Mark II, and they replied the 20D... so expect it to cost $1300-$1600.

It seems like a good camera but compared to my Canon 20D it thought it was too cluttered with dials, switches and knobs. If you are in NY you can see the 7D at the Digital Life show at the Javits Center until Sunday October 16th.

Epson L500V

epson l500v entry level 5 megapixel digital camera

It seems that most new digital cameras released today are at least 4 megapixels in resolution.

Epson's new entry level digital camera, the Epson L500V, offers that and more.

The Epson L500V features a 5 megapixel sensor, 640x480 video, 3x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom, 2.5" (comparitively large) LCD screen, 32mb internal memory, and SD/MMC memory card slot.

The Epson L500V is 3.6" x 2.5" x 1.2" and weighs 5.8oz.

No price or release date yet. My guess for the price of the Epson L500V would be around $400-$450.

Mamiya ZD Medium Format Camera

mamiya zd medium format camera

Mamiya has announced a medium format digital camera: The Mamaya ZD, as well as a camera back: The Mamiya ZD Back.

Medium format is the preferred solution for many professional photographers, having a wider field of view and larger more detailed pictures than regular 35mm film.

This concept translates equally well to digital cameras: The Mamiya ZD has a 36x48mm 22 Megapixel Full Frame RGB Square-structured CCD sensor compared to the 17x13mm sensor of the Olympus E300, or the 24x16mm sensor of the Nikon DX2 SLR Digital Cameras.

The Mamiya ZD is expected to cost over $10,000 so it is strictly for serious professional photographers.

The Olympus E300 is 5.8" x 3.4" x 2.5" and weighs 1.3lb without the lens.

Pricing has not yet been announced.

Nikon has announced a new professional digital SLR camera: the Nikon D2X.

The Nikon D2X has a 12.4 megapixel sensor and captures up to 5 frames a second (or 8 frames per second at 6.8 megapixels).

One really interesting feature is that the Nikon D2X supports a 802.11b/g Wi-Fi wireless transmitter/remote control.

Another unusual feature of the Nikon D2X is a secure interface between the camera and a conpact flash card using encryption keys and/or passwords (only works with some planned Lexar CF cards).

Canon Powershot G6 Details

canon powershot g6 information specs

Of all the cameras announced by Canon last week the one we would most likely buy is the Canon Powershot G6.

Naturally we would love an Eos 20D but at $1999 with the nice new image stablized lens it is difficult to justify the price unless we were using the camera daily.

The Canon Powershot G6 however, at $699 (likely to be closer to $650 if you shop around), can do about 80% of what the 20D can at about a third of the price.

Continue reading to see why we like the Canon Powershot G6.

The G6 is available at Amazon.com for $699 with a ship date of September 15th.

canon eos 20d photos

PhotographyBlog seems to have found photos of the often-rumored Canon Eos 20D accidentally placed on the Canon USA Press Room ahead of schedule.

The main rumor they confirm is that the Eos 20D will support the same EF-S lenses as the Digital Rebel 300D. It also appears that there will be new EF-S image-stabilized 17-85mm F4-5.6 and EF-S wide-angle 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 lenses.

Canon Powershot Pro1

canon powershot pro1 8mp 8 megapixel digital camera

The Canon Powershot Pro1 is the top end camera in Canon's Powershot range of consumer digital cameras.

The Pro1 is an 8 megapixel digital camera that works well at "point and click" but also has a lot more manual settings than most powershot cameras including focus bracketing, exposure bracketing, aperture and shutter priority, and a self-timer.

Trusted Reviews reviewed the Canon Powershot Pro1 and liked it but concluded that for a similar price you might be better off going for the Canon Eos Digital Rebel instead.

Canon Prosumer Digital Cameras

A lot of people think that Canon's prosumer (high-end consumer as opposed to full-time professional photographer) digital cameras are the best around.

Currently you have a choice between the Canon Eos 300D Digital Rebel (for around $900 with 18-55mm lens, $800 without lens) or the Canon Eos-10D (for around $1300). The main differences between them are that the 10D is built more solidly and has more manual configuration options and a slightly better user interface, the 300D however supports a newer type of lens - EF-S.

Now there are rumors of a 20D to be announced in September, current thinking is an 8 megapixel camera that supports EF-S lenses, to be available in November for $1400-$1600.
