Are SSDs faster than regular hard drives?

Computerworld ran some tests to see if the speed difference between SSDs (solid state disks) and regular hard drives are worth the large price difference.

The disks compared were the 32GB Crucial Internal 2.5-in. SATA Solid State Drive, the 32GB Ridata 2.5-in. SATA SSD, the250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 3.5-in. SATA hard drive, and the 200GB Seagate Momentus 7200.2 2.5-in. SATA hard drive.

The results were surprising with the SSD only slightly faster than the regular disks at most tasks.
