New iMacs running overclocked Penryn chips

imac update

When apple announced the iMac upgrade yesterday people were excited to see that the top of the line model boasted specs equivalent to the upcoming X9100 Montevideo chip not the expected Penryn chip.

It turns out Apple didn’t get the first bite at Montevideo, instead they are using overclocked Penryn chips that use 55W of power instead of the Montevideo’s 44W.

With that kind of overclocking I wonder how that affects the chip’s lifespan. No worries though, the mac fanatics will be upgrading next year to the new new iMac running the new new mac operating system.
